SAN
MARTIN DE LOS ANDES | THE PLACE
San Martín de los Andes is much more than one of the central
tourist destinations in Patagonia, with some of the region's best
services offer. As a community that is sensitive about its surroundings,
this town's adminitration serves as a model for others and for the
nature.
Is called "Tourist capital of the Neuquén Region",
has a feature that distinguishes it among other tourist towns in
the region: it is, as well as the town El Bolsón, completely
nestled in its landscape, so hidden that the view form above is
more beautiful than its panoramic views, except fot the postcard
image from the short eastern shore of Lake Lácar ("hunchback"
in mapuche), a freshwater fiord between steep hillsides.
Such marked seclusion gives San Martín de los Andes a feeling
of quiet self-containment, with late sunrises and early sunsets.
Downtown is set on a modest-sized flatland along the lakeshore that
lies at the end of a narrow valley that was carved by the Pocahullo
Creek ("place for seagulls" in mapuche).
The hills with the forested hillsides to the north and south that
are separated by some ten strets, len and intimate and limited feeling
to the town's central area. As further described below, the Bandurrias
Lookout.
